How To: Recover Your Missing iPhone Photos & Videos in iOS 8

Recover Your Missing iPhone Photos & Videos in iOS 8

After updating to iOS 8, some of you have probably noticed that a lot of your pictures and videos are missing from the Photos app. Even if you were to restore your iPad or iPhone to your last backup, they would still be missing. But don't worry, that's just because albums work differently in iOS 8—all of your old photos are still there, just not as in your face as before.

Back in iOS 7, all of your photos were stored in the "Camera Roll" album, easily found in the "Albums" tab. That album is now gone, and two new albums have taken its place—"Recently Added" and "Recently Deleted."

Unlike the older Camera Roll album, Recently Added only shows photos and videos from the last 30 days—and that's it. If you don't have any media that's older than 30 days on your iPad or iPhone, then you probably thought that Recently Added was just the Camera Roll renamed, but it's not, and you would have figured it out eventually.

All of your older photos and videos are still stored on your device and available via Photos, just in a different place. Instead of the Albums tab, head into the "Photos" tab. This will open the "Moments" view, where images and videos are split into actual dates.

For a broader view, tap "Collections" on the top left. This will split images into longer stretches of time, like weeks or years. This is where you'll find all of your photos and videos that are over 30 days old.

If you have other albums in your Albums tab, like Instagram, you will still see all of your older photos in there, as usual.

It's not as easy as Camera Roll, but it helps to locate images a little quicker, and honestly, most of us will be utilizing the Recently Added album frequently. For those of you still having trouble locating images, check out how you can search images by date or location in iOS 8.

This was helpful, but when I record a video it seems to be no where. I figure that is unlikely, but I have not been able to find them. The Videos folder in the new set up does not contain any new videos. Any ideas out there?

hmmm that's odd. After recording a video, do you stop the recording and see the small thumbnail in the gallery icon on the bottom left of the camera interface?

I recently purchased an iPhone 6 plus did the restore from my last back up but none of my pictures show up. I followed the steps and there's just pictures that I took yesterday. Please advise what can I do. Thanks

How did you restore your content, iCloud or iTunes? Either way, ensure that you opted to backup your images and video.

I took a whole heap of pics on a particular day, they all disappeared can't be found anywhere on my phone, though all the pics from the day after onward are all there, how is this possible. Just this one day is gone so many pics. My cloud was not on so they won't be in there. grrrr so frustrated.

THIS IS BULLSHIT! MY PHOTOSAND VIDEOS ARE GONE! I WANT TO KNOW HOW THE FUCK THESE ASSHOLES HAVE THE RIGHT TO BREAK IN TO MY PRIVATE INFO AND DECIDE WHAT GOES AND WHAT STAYS!I HAVE BEEN SPEAKING TO SEVERAL ATTORNEYS RE; THIS BREACH AND IF I DO NOT GET A SOLUTION AFTER CALLING APPLE FOR THE FOURTH TIME I AM GOING TO SUE APPLE FOR INVASION OF PRIVACY. TERMS AND AGREEMENT DO NOT SUPERCEDE THE CONSTITUTION!

I checked out all of your instructions. I wish it were true and helpful but it is not. Many pictures are gone.what is missing is random chunks. Whole days are missing but so are chunks of days. At first I thought I had ran out of iCloud storage but I have not. I have 32Gs available.
